How to Verify Batana Oil Quality: COAs, Specs, and What to Ask Your Supplier
What does a batana oil COA actually cover?
A Certificate of Analysis is a snapshot of one production lot. It is not a general description of the oil and it is not a substitute for a spec sheet. When you request a COA, you are asking a supplier to show you what a lab measured on the material that is going into your drum.
At minimum, a usable COA gives you:
- Product identity, including the botanical name (Elaeis oleifera) and a plain statement of processing, such as raw and unrefined
- Lot or batch number and the production date
- Date of analysis and the name of the laboratory that ran it
- Each test, its method reference, its result, and the acceptance range, with units
- A signature or authorized release from whoever is standing behind the numbers
The method references matter more than buyers expect. A peroxide value with no method behind it is a number without a scale. Standard oil chemistry methods such as AOCS Cd 8b-90 for peroxide value and AOCS Ca 5a-40 for free fatty acids let you compare one lot against another, and against a competitor's material, on the same footing. If the COA lists results but no methods, ask for the methods in writing before you go further.
Raw, cold-pressed, or refined: why the wording changes what you test
These three words describe genuinely different materials, and buyers lose money conflating them. Refined oil has been bleached and deodorized, which strips color and scent and flattens the sensory profile that most batana brands are actually selling. Cold-pressed refers to a specific mechanical pressing process at controlled temperature. Raw, traditionally hand-processed batana is neither of those things.
Our oil is raw, 100% pure and unrefined, hand-processed in La Mosquitia, Honduras. It is not cold-pressed, and we will correct any buyer who writes that on a label. That distinction is not pedantry, it is a claim you would be defending on your own packaging.
Practically, this changes your expectations. Raw batana runs dark, thick, and smoky in aroma, and it firms up as your warehouse cools. Slight color and viscosity variation between lots is normal for a hand-processed material and is not a defect. How is a technical data sheet different from a COA?
The COA tells you about one lot. The technical data sheet (TDS) tells you about the product line: typical ranges rather than single measurements, plus the handling information your operations team needs.
A TDS should give you typical appearance and odor, typical fatty acid profile ranges, specific gravity, storage temperature and shelf life guidance, packaging format, and any INCI naming you will use on labels. Formulators need the TDS to design around the material. QA needs the COA to accept the shipment.
Ask for both together. Then check that they agree with each other. If the COA result for a given parameter sits outside the range published on the TDS, that gap is your first real question for the supplier, and a good one will answer it directly instead of talking around it. What do GC-MS and FTIR tell you as a buyer?
You do not need to run these yourself, but you should understand what each one answers so you know which to request or commission.
GC-MS separates and identifies the fatty acid profile. For batana, oleic acid dominates, with palmitic and linoleic present. Rather than trusting a single figure, ask for the profile across two or three different lots and look at how the ratios move. Genuine single-origin material varies within a band. Material cut with a cheaper oil tends to shift the profile in one consistent direction, because the diluent has its own signature.
FTIR gives you a spectral fingerprint. Its value to a buyer is comparison, not absolute truth. Take an FTIR of your approved reference lot, keep it, and run the same test on future deliveries. Overlay them. A clean overlay means you received what you approved. A divergence means something changed, and you now have a document to raise it with.
Beyond composition, ask whether heavy metals and microbial testing were run, since both are relevant to a cosmetic raw material entering a finished-goods supply chain.
What are the red flags for adulterated or misrepresented batana oil?
Most bad batana is not exotic fraud. It is dilution with a cheaper oil, or refined material sold as raw, sometimes darkened to look the part.
- The same COA turns up twice. Identical numbers across two lot numbers means the certificate was copied, not generated.
- No lot number, no analysis date, or no lab named. An unsourced document proves nothing.
- Every result lands mid-range. Real lab data scatters. Suspiciously tidy numbers are a sign someone typed rather than tested.
- Thin, pourable oil at cool warehouse temperature. Raw batana thickens as it cools.
- A pale or perfectly uniform color, or a neutral scent. That is the profile of refined material.
- Solvent or sharp rancid notes on the nose. Rancidity should also show in the peroxide value, so cross-check.
- Refusal to provide a paid evaluation sample or a retention sample. Any serious supplier expects to be tested.
- Pricing well below what hand-processed material can cost to produce. Ask yourself what was substituted to hit that number.
Checklist: how to verify a batana oil lot before you sign off
Run this in order. Each step is cheap compared with the step after it.
- Request the COA and TDS before you order. Read them for method references and lot specificity, not just for pass marks.
- Buy a paid evaluation sample. A one gallon sample is enough to run your own tests and a small pilot batch. We do not send free samples, and a supplier who does is usually pricing that giveaway into your drum.
- Do a sensory check on arrival. Color, viscosity at a known temperature, and aroma. Write down what you observe so the next lot has a baseline.
- Commission your own GC-MS on the sample. Keep it as your reference profile.
- Retain a sealed portion of every lot. Label it with the lot number and receipt date and store it cool and dark.
- Track peroxide value over time. Test at receipt, then again at six and twelve months on your retained sample. Two or three lots in, you have your own oxidation curve for this material in your own storage conditions, which is worth more than any generic shelf-life claim.
- Compute your true cost per kilogram. Multiply gallons by 3.785 to get liters, multiply by the specific gravity on the TDS to get kilograms, then divide your landed cost by that figure. Compare suppliers on cost per kilogram of oil, never on cost per drum.
- Confirm the lot number on the drum matches the paperwork. This gets skipped constantly and it is the whole point of a lot-specific COA.
What should you ask a supplier before the first drum order?
Put these in an email so the answers are on record:
- Can you send a COA for the specific lot I would receive, not a sample certificate?
- Which laboratory performed the analysis, and which methods were used?
- Is this oil raw and unrefined, and will you confirm in writing that it is not cold-pressed or refined?
- How much lot-to-lot variation should I expect in color, viscosity, and fatty acid profile?
- What is the minimum order, and is there flexibility for a launching brand?
- What is current lead time, and how does it move by season?
- How is the oil packed, and what storage conditions do you recommend on arrival?

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a supplier's COA in my own regulatory or retailer documentation?
Usually yes as supporting evidence, but retailers and contract manufacturers often want a certificate tied to the exact lot in your finished product, not a generic one. Keep the COA filed against the lot number of every drum you receive so you can produce it on request. If a buyer or auditor asks for testing you do not have, commission it on your retained sample rather than asking the supplier to re-issue paperwork.
How much oil do I need to run meaningful third-party testing?
Far less than a drum. Most labs need only a small volume for GC-MS, FTIR, peroxide value, and heavy metals, so a one gallon paid evaluation sample covers a full test panel with plenty left for pilot formulation. Buy the sample, test it, and formulate with it before you commit to a drum.
Does darker batana oil mean higher quality?
Not by itself. Raw, traditionally hand-processed batana is naturally dark, but color can also be manipulated, and a dark refined oil is still refined. Treat color as one input alongside viscosity, aroma, and the analytical data, and always compare against a retained reference lot rather than against a general expectation.
What should I do if a new lot does not match my reference profile?
Quarantine the lot, do not release it to production, and send the supplier your reference data and the new results side by side. Ask specifically what changed in harvest, season, or processing. Natural variation in a hand-processed oil has an explanation a supplier can give you; a substituted or blended material usually does not.
How should I store batana oil once the drum arrives?
Cool, dark, and sealed, with minimal headspace once you start decanting, since oxygen exposure is what drives peroxide value up. Expect the oil to thicken in cooler storage, which is normal for raw material. Decant into smaller sealed containers rather than repeatedly opening the drum.
